We are pleased to announce that the Paul Stumpf Award 2026 has been awarded to Dr. Yingqi Cai.
Dr. Cai is an Assistant Professor at Washington State University, where she leads a research program focused on plant lipid metabolism and lipid droplet biology. She obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of North Texas, studying lipogenic factors in plants. She subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where she investigated regulatory mechanisms of plant lipid metabolism and developed strategies to enhance lipid accumulation in vegetative tissues without compromising plant growth.
Her research has significantly advanced our understanding of lipid droplet biology in plants, including the identification of key lipid droplet-associated proteins and the development of mechanistic models describing lipid droplet formation. At Washington State University, her group integrates molecular, biochemical, and advanced imaging approaches to elucidate the mechanisms of lipid droplet biogenesis and function. Her work also explores their roles in plant development, stress responses, and energy storage, as well as their potential for engineering plants to produce valuable bioproducts.
As part of the award ceremony, Dr. Cai will deliver a lecture entitled:
“Plant Cellular Machinery for Lipid Droplet Biogenesis”
We warmly congratulate Dr. Cai on this well-deserved recognition
At each ISPL meeting, the ISPL community also recognizes excellence among early-career researchers through the presentation of the Paul K. Stumpf Award. This award honors the landmark contributions of Paul Stumpf to the field of plant lipid biochemistry. The recipient will receive the award and will have the opportunity to deliver an oral presentation of their submitted paper at the 27th ISPL.
Applications for the Paul K. Stumpf Award are now open.
To be eligible, applicants must either (a) be currently undertaking a PhD project in plant lipid science, or (b) hold a PhD with fewer than eight years of relevant postdoctoral experience. Applications must be submitted by March 15, 2026, and outcomes will be communicated before April 7, 2026. Selection will be based primarily on scientific merit and the candidate’s potential, in keeping with Paul Stumpf’s vision of fostering a worldwide community of plant lipid researchers.
Applicants should submit the following materials:
In addition, applicants must arrange for a confidential letter of recommendation from their supervisor or a senior colleague. This letter must be submitted directly to the ISPL Organizing Committee by the referee.
All application materials must be submitted by email to noemi.ruiz@uma.es no later than March 15, 2026.
